Guidelines for Poll Workers

  • You must be a registered voter in Indian River County and be able to read, write and speak the English language as required by Florida Law. (FS. 102.012(2))

  • You must be able to work a minimum, 14 &ndash 15; hour day.  (Pursuant to Florida Law, you cannot leave the polling place.  Be prepared to spend the whole day by bringing meals, drinks and any medication that you may need.)

  • You must arrive at your work location promptly at 6:00 a.m. on election morning.

  • You must attend a mandatory orientation session prior to working at the polls.  Attendance/Completion does not guarantee that you will work, only that you will be placed on the active list.

  • There is NO SMOKING allowed!

  • Poll worker assignments are based on experience, party balance, work history from prior elections and your availability to work in future elections. The number of workers needed is based on the expected turnout for each election; “regulars” may become “standbys” for a particular election.  A poll worker who refuses to be a standby may not be assigned to future elections.

  • Florida Law requires all poll workers to attend mandatory training workshops prior to working.  Workshops run from 3 to 6 hours, depending on job assignment.

  • It is very important to send back poll worker applications as soon as you receive them so that we will know if you are available to work an election.

  • If there is a change in your phone number or address, please notify our office in writing as soon as possible.

  • You may not serve as a poll worker if you are an immediate family member of a candidate, or are actively working on a candidate’s campaign.

Teamwork among poll workers on Election Day is important to your co-workers, the voters, and the election staff.  Being a team member involves assisting in the set up and closing of the polls, cooperation, flexibility and having a positive attitude throughout Election Day!

REMEMBER:  THERE IS NO “I” IN TEAM!
