Voting as a College Student

To be eligible to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen who will be at least 18 years old on Election Day, and you must also have registered to vote before the election book closing date. The books close 29 days prior to the election in the state of Florida.

 If you are in college, the following information will help you decide whether to vote in your prior district/state or at your college address.

Q. Should I register to vote at my prior address or should I register where my school is located?
A. You should register to vote in the county and state where you are a legal resident.

Q. What is my legal residence?
A. You are the one to determine and declare the city, county and state in which you claim your legal residence. You may choose to keep your parents address as your legal address, or you may wish to designate the city, county or state where your school is located. You cannot be registered to vote in both locations.

Q. How do I request a vote-by-mail ballot?
A. From the Supervisor of Elections Office in the county you are claiming as your legal residence. Procedures vary in each state. In the state of Florida a voter can request a vote-by-mail ballot in person, by mail, by telephone, online or by email.

Q. What is the deadline for requesting and voting a vote-by-mail ballot?
A. The deadlines vary in each state. The deadline in Florida for a voter to request that a vote-by-mail ballot be mailed is 5 p.m. on the 12th day before the election. The voter's voted ballot must be received at the Supervisor of Elections Office no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day.

Q. What if I am home during early voting or on Election Day?
A. If you have declared your home address as your legal residence, you may vote early or at your assigned polling place on Election Day.  Please be prepared to show photo and signature ID.
